The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) still offers the EV Chargepoint Grant for eligible households in Wales. If you live in a flat or rental property and have off-street parking, you can claim up to £350 towards the cost of a home charger installation.
To qualify, the installer must be OZEV-authorised — meaning NAPIT or equivalent certification with EV-specific accreditation. RTS Electrical is an OZEV-authorised installer, so we handle all grant paperwork on your behalf.
The Welsh Government also runs the Arbed scheme and various local authority grants that can contribute towards EV infrastructure, particularly in rural areas where public charging is limited. Eligibility varies by council.
For businesses, the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) provides up to £14,000 towards the installation of multiple charge points — £350 per socket for up to 40 bays. This is ideal for fleets, staff parking, and customer charging.
Load management is critical. A 7kW charger draws 32A — nearly the entire capacity of a standard domestic supply. We assess your Maximum Demand, install load-balancing systems if needed, and advise on supply upgrades for multi-charger setups.
Smart chargers are now the norm. Units like the Ohme, Hypervolt, and Zappi integrate with Octopus Agile and other time-of-use tariffs to charge your car when electricity is cheapest — sometimes even free during negative pricing events.
If you already have solar panels, a Zappi charger can divert excess solar generation directly into your car instead of exporting it for a few pence per kWh. This is one of the highest-value uses of home solar energy.
