Your consumer unit — often still called the fuse box — is the heart of your home's electrical system. Every watt of power that enters your property passes through it, and if it is outdated, overloaded, or missing modern protection, your entire household is at risk. In Flintshire, where much of the housing stock in Mold, Buckley, Connah's Quay, and Shotton dates from the 1950s to 1980s, old fuse boxes are one of the most common problems we encounter during EICR inspections and pre-purchase surveys.
The first sign you need a consumer unit upgrade is the presence of a wooden-backed fuse board with ceramic fuse carriers. These pre-1980s units have no RCD protection, no surge protection, and rely on fuse wire that the homeowner must replace manually when a circuit overloads. If you still have one of these, your installation is decades behind current safety standards and should be treated as an urgent priority. We replace these with modern metal-clad units during same-day installations across Flintshire.
The second warning sign is nuisance tripping. If your RCD trips repeatedly when it rains, when you use the vacuum cleaner, or for no obvious reason, the device may be worn out. RCDs have a finite lifespan — typically 10 to 15 years — and their sensitivity degrades over time. A failing RCD may not trip when it should, or it may trip when it should not. Both scenarios are dangerous. During a consumer unit upgrade, we install new dual RCD or RCBO boards with test buttons and clear circuit labelling.
The third indicator is an overcrowded board. Older fuse boxes typically have 4 to 6 ways. Modern homes need 10 to 16 ways to accommodate lighting, sockets, cooker, shower, outdoor power, EV charger, and smart home circuits. If your electrician has had to double-up circuits on a single fuseway, or if there is no space for a planned extension or kitchen upgrade, a new consumer unit is essential. We install Hager, Schneider, and Wylex boards with ample spare capacity for futureproofing.
A fourth consideration is surge protection. Since Amendment 1 to BS 7671 in 2019, surge protection devices (SPDs) are mandatory for most new and replacement consumer units unless a formal risk assessment justifies omission. SPDs protect your electronics, appliances, and increasingly, your solar inverter and EV charger from voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes or grid switching. A modern consumer unit should include a Type 2 SPD as standard. Every unit we install in Flintshire includes surge protection fitted and tested.
The fifth factor is metal-clad enclosure. Since 2015, all new consumer units in domestic premises must be enclosed in non-combustible material — typically steel. This regulation was introduced after multiple house fires caused by overheating plastic consumer units. If your existing unit is plastic and was installed before 2015, it does not necessarily need immediate replacement purely for that reason, but any new installation or major upgrade must use a metal board. Our installations use high-quality steel enclosures with magnetic covers for easy access during inspections.
So what does a consumer unit upgrade cost in Flintshire in 2025? For a straightforward replacement of an old fuse board with a new 10-way metal consumer unit, dual RCDs, SPD, and full testing and certification, prices start from approximately 450 to 650 pounds. More complex boards with RCBOs on every circuit, additional circuits for extensions or EV chargers, and external garages or outbuildings typically range from 650 to 1,200 pounds. The exact cost depends on the number of circuits, cable routing, access, and whether the main earth and bonding need upgrading at the same time.
A consumer unit upgrade is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations, which means it must either be notified to the local authority or carried out by a registered competent person who can self-certificate. As a NAPIT-registered contractor, RTS Electrical self-certifies all consumer unit upgrades and issues an Electrical Installation Certificate and Building Regulation Compliance Certificate within 24 hours of completion. We cover all of Flintshire, Wrexham, Chester, and the Wirral. Call us for a free visual assessment of your fuse box.
